We are thrilled to share with you that we recently had an incredible member celebration where we honored and celebrated the contributions of our members, as well as the graduation of our most recent cohort of Farm Stewards. It was a wonderful afternoon filled with joy, laughter, and a whole lot of fun! What made this event even more special was that it was our first member meeting in our new office space!

Estamos encantados de compartir con ustedes que recientemente tuvimos una increíble celebración de miembros en la que honramos y celebramos las contribuciones de nuestros miembros, así como la graduación de nuestra cohorte más reciente de Farm Stewards. ¡Fue una tarde maravillosa llena de alegría, risas y mucha diversión! ¡Lo que hizo que este evento fuera aún más especial fue que fue nuestra primera reunión de miembros en nuestro nuevo espacio de oficina!

 As many of you know, we have will soon be opening our new office space at the Casa Adelante affordable housing development right by In Chan Kajaal on 255 Shotwell. This community victory put  a public space, a city-owned parking lot, to use for people-centered needs: providing housing and ensuring access to an environmental justice park for the people that make the Mission District. 

Como muchos de ustedes saben, pronto abriremos nuestro nuevo espacio de oficinas en el desarrollo de viviendas asequibles Casa Adelante justo al lado de In Chan Kajaal en 255 Shotwell. Esta victoria de la comunidad puso un espacio público, un estacionamiento propiedad de la ciudad, para usar para las necesidades centradas en las personas: proporcionar vivienda y garantizar el acceso a un parque de justicia ambiental para las personas que forman el Distrito de la Misión.

Casa Adelante is a model of how to meet the needs of low-income residents for homes and address the urgency of the public health and climate crisis we face.  As an all electric building that does not use gas, we improve indoor air quality while reducing the use of fossil fuels; thereby, advancing healthy housing and climate justice. 

Casa Adelante es un modelo de cómo satisfacer las necesidades de viviendas de los residentes de bajos ingresos y abordar la urgencia de la crisis climática y de salud pública que enfrentamos. Como un edificio completamente eléctrico y que no usa gas, mejoramos la calidad del aire interior mientras reducimos el uso de combustibles fósiles; por lo tanto, promover la vivienda saludable y la justicia climática.

We were honored to have so many PODER families present at our member celebration. It was a testament to the power of community and the strength of our shared values. As we celebrated our members, we were reminded of just how important our powerful group of member leaders is to the success of our organization. Without their dedication and hard work, PODER would not be able to continue to make the impact that we do in our community.

We are grateful for each and every one of our members and honored to have the opportunity to recognize them for their contributions. We were also thrilled to celebrate the graduation of our Farm Stewards. These individuals have worked hard to develop the skills and knowledge necessary to become leaders in sustainable agriculture. We are proud of their accomplishments and excited to see how they will use their new skills to make a positive impact in their communities.

Of course, no celebration would be complete without a piñata! It was a highlight of the day as we all took turns trying to break it open and collect the delicious treats inside. It was a perfect way to cap off a fantastic afternoon spent in community. As we prepare to move into our new space, we invite you to keep an eye out for our upcoming office warming event. This will be an opportunity for us to celebrate this new chapter together as we complete the finishing touches on our new home. We can’t wait to welcome you all and continue to work together to build community power and real solutions to the climate crisis.

Bicis del Pueblo has been participating in the Climate Ride Green Fondos since last year. The most recent SoCal Climate Ride Green Fondo was an unforgettable weekend filled with challenging rides, inspiring stories, and a sense of camaraderie that pushed our team of riders to their limits

Bicis del Pueblo participa desde el año pasado en el Paseo por el Clima Fondos Verdes. El SoCal Climate Ride Green Fondo más reciente fue un fin de semana inolvidable lleno de retos desafiantes, historias inspiradoras y una sensación de camaradería que llevó a nuestro equipo de ciclistas al límite.

Our team, consisting of dedicated riders, rode over 100 miles throughout the weekend. We pushed ourselves to new heights, overcoming steep climbs, navigating winding roads, and soaking in the breathtaking scenery of the Santa Barbara hills. It wasn’t easy, but we supported each other every step of the way, cheering each other on and lending support when needed.

Nuestro equipo, formado por ciclistas dedicados, recorrió más de 100 millas durante el fin de semana. Nos empujamos a nuevas alturas, superando subidas empinadas, navegando por caminos sinuosos y sumergiéndonos en el impresionante paisaje de las colinas de Santa Bárbara. No fue fácil, pero nos apoyamos mutuamente en cada paso del camino, animándonos mutuamente y prestándonos apoyo cuando era necesario.

The event’s keynote speaker Erick Cedeño shared his wisdom and experiences as a bicycle historian and adventurer. Erick Cedeño has done remarkable work retracing the Underground Railroad and the Buffalo Soldiers Bike Expedition. Erick shared his experiences of biking through historic routes, tracing the footsteps of freedom seekers and his most recent adventure, taking the Buffalo Soldiers bicycle brigade’s 1,180 km route from Fort Missoula, Montana to St. Louis, Missouri.

El orador principal del evento, Erick Cedeño, compartió su sabiduría y experiencias como historiador y aventurero de la bicicleta. Erick Cedeño ha realizado un trabajo notable al volver sobre el Ferrocarril Subterráneo y la Expedición en Bicicleta Buffalo Soldiers. Erick’s stories of resilience, determination, and connecting to places and peoples history by biking were inspiring. His passion for using biking as a tool for social change was contagious, and we are grateful for the opportunity to build community with him and learn from his incredible journey’s.

Las historias de resiliencia, determinación y conexión de Erick con la historia de lugares y pueblos a través del ciclismo fueron inspiradoras. Su pasión por usar el ciclismo como herramienta para el cambio social fue contagiosa, y estamos agradecidos por la oportunidad de construir una comunidad con él y aprender de su increíble viaje.

We exchanged tales of our own bike journeys, learned from each other’s experiences, and found common ground in our passion for environmental justice, racial justice and biking. We hope that this experience is just the beginning of a longer relationship and that we can continue to work together to create long term systems change for people’s and the environment wellbeing. In doing so also inspiring more people to join the movement.

Intercambiamos nuestas historias de bicicletas, aprendimos de las experiencias de los demás y encontramos puntos en común en nuestra pasión por la justicia ambiental, la justicia racial y el ciclismo. Esperamos que esta experiencia sea solo el comienzo de una relación más larga y que podamos continuar trabajando juntos para crear un cambio de sistemas a largo plazo para el bienestar de las personas y el medio ambiente. Al hacerlo, también inspira a más personas a unirse al movimiento.

The most rewarding aspects of the event was the team spirit that kept each of us pedaling further and further. We collectively held it down for each other, motivating and encouraging one another to push ourselves beyond our limits. The sense of community and support was palpable, and it made the entire experience even more special.

El aspecto más gratificante del evento fue el espíritu de equipo que nos mantuvo a cada uno de nosotros pedaleando más y más. Nos defendimos colectivamente unos a otros, motivándonos y animándonos unos a otros a esforzarnos más allá de nuestros límites. El sentido de comunidad y apoyo era palpable e hizo que toda la experiencia fuera aún más especial.

We wanted to give you an update on the ongoing shop days happening at Bicis del Pueblo space at 1950 Mission Street. We’re happy to report that they’ve been a huge success, with many residents of La Fénix and the broader community showing up to learn about bike mechanics, get repairs done, and earn a free bike.

Queríamos brindarle una actualización sobre los días de taller en curso que ocurren en el espacio Bicis del Pueblo en 1950 Mission Street. Nos complace informar que han sido un gran éxito, con muchos residentes de La Fénix y la comunidad en general que se presentaron para aprender sobre mecánica de bicicletas, realizar reparaciones y ganar una bicicleta gratis.

It’s been amazing to see such a powerful intergenerational group of community members attend the shop days. People of all ages from our neighborhoods have come together to learn from each other, share stories, and have fun. The shop days have become a space where everyone is welcome and included.

Ha sido increíble ver a un grupo intergeneracional tan poderoso de miembros de la comunidad asistir a los días de taller. Personas de todas las edades de nuestros vecindarios se han unido para aprender unos de otros, compartir historias y divertirse. Los días de taller se han convertido en un espacio donde todos son bienvenidos e incluidos.

Our Bicis Action Team leaders have been doing an awesome job of leading the space and helping people with their bikes. They’re knowledgeable, patient, and always willing to lend a hand. Plus, they’re super friendly, so make sure to say hi and get to know them.

Nuestros líderes del Equipo de Acción Bicis han estado haciendo un trabajo increíble al liderar el espacio y ayudar a las personas con sus bicicletas. The best part of the shop days is that they’re not just about fixing bikes. They’re an opportunity to connect with other people in the community and build relationships. We believe that bikes can be a catalyst for community power, and the shop days are just one way we’re working to make that happen.

La mejor parte de los días de taller es que no se trata solo de arreglar bicicletas. Son una oportunidad para conectarse con otras personas en la comunidad y construir relaciones. Our own Antonio Díaz represents PODER on the Grassroots Governance Body of the Fund for Frontline Power. The Fund for Frontline Power was created to move resources to community organizations that are implementing inclusive, regenerative, replicable, and scalable solutions to the climate crisis.

Every day we are asked to do more with less. Budget, staff, and resources are at a premium while the needs of our communities continue to grow. It’s a difficult place to be for any organization, and it’s uniquely frustrating for nonprofits at the frontlines of climate injustice. Frontline community-led organizations have shown time and time again that we have innovative and practical solutions to the climate crisis, yet we continue to be overlooked and underfunded.

PODER, along with other member organizations from the Race & Equity in all Planning Coalition recently rallied to ensure City Hall adopts REP’s Citywide People’s Plan in their proposed Housing Element.

PODER, junto con otras organizaciones miembros de Race & Equity in all Planning Coalition, se unieron recientemente para garantizar que el ayuntamiento adopte el Plan de personas para toda la ciudad de REP en su Elemento de vivienda propuesto.

The current Housing Element works against racial and social equity, and threatens to have even more devastating impacts on vulnerable communities than Redevelopment did. As a response a series of recommendations gathered from the voices of those most impacted by displacement have been formalized as The Citywide People’s Plan. This plan prioritizes neighborhood and community expertise to actively and meaningfully participate in development and land use decisions. It ensures the next eight years of development are people centered.

El Elemento de Vivienda actual va en contra de la equidad racial y social, y amenaza con tener impactos aún más devastadores en las comunidades vulnerables que el Reurbanización. Como respuesta, se ha formalizado una serie de recomendaciones recogidas de las voces de las personas más afectadas por el desplazamiento como el Plan de la gente para toda la ciudad. Este plan prioriza la experiencia del vecindario y la comunidad para participar activa y significativamente en las decisiones de desarrollo y uso de la tierra. Garantiza que los próximos ocho años de desarrollo estén centrados en las personas.

Knowing that  the choices made now are essential to the survival of our communities, we assembled at City Hall to pressure for the Peoples Plan to be adopted. After a powerful rally and extended debate from the board of supervisors, member organizations waited patiently to give public comment. Inside of San Francisco City Hall, community leaders gave their public comment late into the evening,  emphasizing the importance of listening to grassroots leadership.

The uncertainty and fear faced by immigrants living in the United States without immigration status is real. With this project, we have given ourselves the task of bringing the most relevant information so that immigrant families have the needed resources to defend themselves, The stories in this zine are the true stories of working families who struggle every day to raise their children, working with dignity and contributing to their communities daily. 

 As always, the strong showing of people-power positions us to continue applying pressure to the City Planning Department to ensure the Housing Element addresess community needs.  Similarly, the board of supervisors needs to follow through with commitments to make affordable housing and equity a high priority on their agendas.

Como siempre, la fuerte demostración del poder de la gente nos posiciona para continuar presionando al Departamento de Planificación de la Ciudad para garantizar que el Elemento de Vivienda aborde las necesidades de la comunidad. De manera similar, la junta de supervisores debe cumplir con los compromisos de hacer que la vivienda asequible y la equidad sean una alta prioridad en sus agendas.

PODER is clear that any effort to face climate crises centers on a housed and healthy city for working class people. The  Promotora team at  PODER has been sharing the new and beautiful Know Your Rights material: “Con Confianza y Sin Miedo” on ‘Facebook Live’.“Con Confianza y Sin Miedo” is a collection of stories about protecting our rights in the face of ICE enforcement. Each story covers how best to protect ourselves in cases of interaction with immigration agents.

Este proyecto del fanzine-revista/manual de nuestros derechos civiles fue desarrollado con la intención de ofrecer una herramienta informativa a nuestras comunidades inmigrantes. Nuestra intención es que cada familia inmigrante en San Francisco tenga al alcance de su mano este manual y aprenda sobre sus derechos civiles y sepan cómo responder ante una emergencia migratoria.  

This zine was developed with the intention of offering an informative tool for our immigrant communities. Our intention is that every immigrant family in San Francisco has this manual at their fingertips and learns how to respond to an immigration emergency.

La incertidumbre y el miedo que enfrentan los inmigrantes que viven en Los Estados Unidos sin un estatus migratorio es real. Y con este proyecto, nos hemos dado a la tarea de traer la información más relevante para que las familias inmigrantes tengan los recursos necesarios para defenderse en caso de que tengan un encuentro con los agentes de inmigracion.  Las historias del fanzine son las historias reales de las familias trabajadoras que día a día luchan para sacar a sus hijos adelante, trabajando dignamente y contribuyendo al enriquecimiento cultural y laboral de este país.

Cuando nosotros estamos preparados y capaces de podemos encarar la lucha para hacer una Transicion Justa hacia un mundo equitativo sin persecucion o violencia hacia nuestra comunidad migrante. Usen este material como recurso y asegurense de estar al tanto con oportunidades para unirse a la lucha.

As we work towards a world without borders and fight to affirm the dignity of our migrant community, it is important to prepare ourselves with the necessary tools to defend ourselves on a day-to-day basis. When we are prepared and able to, we can face the fight for a Just Transition, towards an equitable world without persecution or violence towards our migrant community. Use this material as a resource and make sure you are up to date with opportunities to join us in the fight.
