Weaving Community at Fort Mason: Bonnie Ora Sherk’s Legacy Lives on in Urban Campesinx Workshops || Tejiendo comunidad en Fort Mason: El legado de Bonnie Ora Sherk continua en talleres de Urban Campesinx

April 10, 2024 by Lucas Solórzano

This past months series of Sunday Workshops hosted by Urban Campesinx at Fort Mason was a remarkable journey through the intersection of art, nature, and community. Drawing upon the inspirational legacy of Bonnie Ora Sherk, we embarked on a hands-on exploration of urban gardening, embracing the transformative power of green spaces within our city’s landscape. Each workshop, set against the backdrop of Sherk’s pioneering work in creating vibrant parklets and the interactive exhibit “Bonnie Ora Sherk: Life Frames Since 1970”, offered a unique opportunity to connect with the earth and each other.

Amidst soil, seeds, and laughter, we learned about sustainable gardening practices and celebrated the profound impact of communal efforts in urban renewal and ecological awareness. Sherk’s vision of integrating life, art, and community through environmental transformations was brought to life, reminding us of the potential within our reach to foster regenerative, thriving urban environments.

To learn more about this series listen to our own Tere Almaguer share her insights on a special ‘KQED Forum’ podcast episode. Uplifting environmental activism and community empowerment, Tere’s conversation extended the dialogue sparked by our workshops, offering listeners a deeper understanding of the ongoing efforts to nurture our Yelamu (San Francisco) ecosystems at Hummingbird Farm.

As we reflect on the success of these workshops and the insightful dialogue shared by Tere, we’re reminded of the power of our Urban Campesinx community practicing intentional land stewardship by walking the walk. These experiences not only honor the innovative spirit of Bonnie Ora Sherk but also pave the way for ongoing power building and deep environmental justice within our own San Francisco landscapes. Let’s carry forward the inspiration and insights gained, continuing to cultivate a more connected, regenerative, and vibrant home.

Commissioner Gilbert Williams || Comisario Gilbert Williams

April 10, 2024 by Lucas Solórzano

Gilbert Williams dedicated PODER member for over a decade has spent the entire pandemic learning about Land Use through his participation in the Race & Equity in all Planning Coalition’s “All Planning to the People” series. Always wanting to learn more by asking questions, and supporting his fellow community members leadership development, his leadership presented an opportunity to have a seat at the decision making table. After months of careful consideration, weeks of sleepless nights navigating the application process to join the Planning Commission. It was a whirlwind finale that started with the Rules Committee on Monday March 11th, Full Board vote Tuesday March 12th,  Sworn in Wednesday March 13th, and first day as Planning Commissioner on Thursday March 14th.

This past Saturday March 30th,2024 only 17 days after his first meeting, Gilbert finally has the opportunity to celebrate this community win! All smiles, surrounded by his partner Jackie, family, friends, colleagues fighting for social justice, all witnessed President of the Board of Supervisors Aron Peskin officiate Gilbert’s community swearing in located at 4840 Mission Street. One of the two new 100% affordable sites, the celebration uplifted the community effort that led to a larger neighborhood clinic on the first floor. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfectly matching the energy in that space.

April 10, 2024 by Lucas Solórzano

With the warmth of over a hundred friends, family, and community members, our recent office warming at 255 Shotwell Street, was a celebration of community, resilience, and collective aspirations.

The evening kicked off with ceremony honoring the four directions, grounding us in the significance of our gathering and the space we were inaugurating. Alicia Briceño shared the compelling journey to naming Park In Chan Kaajal, delving into “Mi Pueblito” and its deep ties to our collective identity and vision for our neighborhoods. Celebrating our new office space as the fruit of her leadership, and many other everyday leaders, was a highlight of the night.

Fernando Martí from our board unveiled a breathtaking mural, a gift to the community symbolizing our shared dreams and struggles. The visual narrative of the mural, coupled with heartening speeches from Hummingbird Farm youth, underscored the theme “our roots are strong” weaving a tapestry of relationship between each other and our land.

The celebration included a screen printing station outdoors, and Bicis del Pueblo heightened our excitement with a raffle. The Bicis del Pueblo Bike Build Committee, were happy to raffle off a beautiful, meticulously built road bike as a fundraiser. Adding to the community and healing spirit, we shared plant medicine from Hummingbird Farm.

This office warming was a vibrant declaration of our ongoing dedication to environmental justice, grassroots leadership, and the power of community. As we step into this new era at PODER from our space at 255 Shotwell, we’re fueled by the unwavering support and the vibrant energy of our community.

Our heartfelt thanks to everyone who played a part in this remarkable milestone. As we forge ahead, we’re inspired by the knowledge that our collective endeavors lay the foundation for more visionary manifestations of people power . Stay with us on this journey, as together, we continue to cultivate thriving neighborhoods.
