Building Community and Resilience Together: From Emergency Preparedness to Celebration.

September 19, 2025 by Lucas Solórzano

Membership at PODER isn’t just hard work organizing— we build community, share joy, and grow together. This summer, we made space for both resilience and fun.

We recently hosted our annual Member BBQ. Hosted at Hummingbird Farm for the first time, we shared a sunny afternoon full of laughter, good food, games, raffles and prizes. It was an offering to our members, a moment to slow down, connect across generations, and celebrate the power we’ve built together—all on land we steward, and in community.

That same spirit of care carried into our collaboration with the San Francisco Fire Department’s LISTOS Emergency Preparedness Training. This exciting opportunity equipped PODER families with critical skills to face any type of emergency, and disaster response. Hosted at our Mission office with support from SFFD and the LISTOS program, Fire Chief Dean Crispen opened the space with warmth and solidarity. The training was fully in Spanish, centering language justice and accessibility for our Latinx immigrant families.

It was powerful to see former PODER youth—now firefighters and facilitators—lead the session for current members. As Carlos, a past youth member turned trainer, reminded us: “When you learn something important, the first thing you do is bring it back to the people.” That’s exactly what this was: intergenerational knowledge sharing, collective readiness, and mutual care in action.

As we face the consequences of climate change, this type of emergency preparation builds the confidence and resilience of our neighborhoods. We are grateful for the collaboration and care the SFFD took in bringing these skills to us directly, and are already planning to continue preparing our members to face any emergency.

From barbecue smoke to fire safety drills, at PODER people power tastes like carne asada and feels like preparedness passed hand to hand.
