Working class Latinx families in San Francisco are a bloc of tremendous potential political power to shape the cities political landscape.
In the mid-1990s, we pioneered the Youth Uprising Coalition, a powerful force that successfully defeated a proposed youth curfew on the ballot. This early triumph exemplified our unwavering commitment to preserving the rights and freedom of our young people.
Throughout the 2000s, our electoral work gained even greater strength as we actively participated in capacity building programs facilitated by Mobilize the Immigrant Vote and the California Alliance (now California Calls). These programs fortified our ability to amplify our voices and effectuate meaningful change.
Since 2010, we have joined forces with San Francisco Rising, an influential coalition of eight grassroots organizations, to forge the political power of our city’s poor and working-class people of color. In a remarkably short span of time, San Francisco Rising has made a profound impact on our city’s elections and the progressive landscape. Through our involvement in San Francisco Rising we have led strategic campaigns, spearheading government policy changes and administrative efforts that enhance the lives of our diverse communities.
We have educated and mobilized voters to approve local measures that secure up to $36 million annually, safeguarding San Francisco’s vital services by taxing the sale of luxury homes. We have championed the cause for fair wages, successfully passing legislation that raised the minimum wage to $15 per hour by 2018!
With ¡Pa’ Mi Comunidad Latina, Yo Voy A Votar! PODER’s Voter Engagement Project, we aim to:
- Build political power within targeted electoral districts through community organizing and strategic voter engagement strategies, including education, issue analysis, and direct voter contact.
- Increase and sustain the participation of Latinx immigrants in the electoral process, ensuring their voices are heard and their needs are met.
- Contribute to the creation of a powerful statewide progressive voter network, uniting voices and forging a path toward a more just and equitable future.
