“We’re growing our own food in southeast San Francisco, and we’ve been distributing food to folks that need it…And so I think all these things are beautiful and growing.”
Tere Almaguer, PODER’s Environmental Justice Organizer
Hummingbird Farm is a healing sacred space on occupied land, we give thanks to the Ramaytush Ohlone of this land as original stewards. We honor the spirits of those that died at the hands of colonization by the state and church.
“We have not inherited the land from our ancestors, we are borrowing it from our children.”
Hummingbird Farm is an urban agriculture, food justice and leadership program brought to you by PODER! Led by Urban Campesinx’s, this farm is a space where everyone that reflects the deep diversity of our neighborhoods comes together to practice environmental, economic, and health justice strategies in the Southeast neighborhoods of San Francisco. Reflecting the lessons, wisdom, and seeds of our ancestors, we work hand in hand to create healthy and vibrant communities, by growing food and plant medicine and regenerating cultural practices.
Hummingbird Farm embodies the spirit of environmental justice as a revolutionary space where solidarity-based economic models and collective governance of land take center stage. Our commitment to environmental justice ensures that the benefits of sustainable living and cultural preservation extend not only to Latinx immigrants in San Francisco, but to all underinvested communities, creating a resilient and inclusive community for generations to come.
Hummingbird Farm serves as a vital hub for the community. We leverage the power of urban agriculture to tackle social injustices head-on. We dive deep into the rich traditions and experiences of immigrant families in the Excelsior district, channeling their knowledge and wisdom to create a sustainable and vibrant community.
It provides a welcoming space for collective gatherings, and fosters connections between community members. Hummingbird Farm hosts educational workshops and programs that build resiliency in the face of climate chaos, promote community access and deepen the relationship to land. All while growing food and plant medicine to uphold our communities healing and well-being.
We’re breaking down barriers and building a community that thrives on shared decision-making and mutual support. We are undoing the disconnection between each other, between people and the land, between workers and their labor, between communities and their ancestral wisdom. Together we are integrating ‘buen vivir’ (well-being) at all scales of life!
Here’s where the excitement kicks in: as a volunteer, you’ll get your hands dirty with hands-on urban farming experiences. Stay informed on ways to join us at the farm or donate directly to our Hummingbird Farm fundraiser.
