San Francisco Healthy Resilient Homes

Ensuring Dignified Living for Working-Class Latinx Families

Watch the story of Casa Adelante, a significant victory for affordable housing in the heart of the Mission District neighborhood. This project provides secure and dignified homes for our families, helping them stay rooted in the neighborhoods they have built and sustained. Learn about the community leadership to build a 100 % affordable and carbon-neutral housing development.

Through the Healthy Resilient Homes initiative, we are working to create sustainable, healthy, and dignified living environments for working-class Latinx families in San Francisco’s Mission and Excelsior districts.

As part of San Francisco’s Climate Action Plan  natural gas in all buildings will be phased out by 2040. By decarbonizing homes and implementing comprehensive renovations, we reduce greenhouse gas emissions, improve indoor air quality and public health, lower utility costs, and create good paying, family-sustaining jobs. This includes replacing gas-powered appliances with efficient electric alternatives and upgrading home insulation and windows. Our goal is to enhance the quality of life for our community members by investing in the renovations that will ensure dignified housing. All while preventing displacement and gentrification, ensuring that working-class Latinx families can continue to live and thrive in their neighborhoods.

By decarbonizing homes we are addressing the urgent need to reduce greenhouse gas emissions while also improving the quality of life for our community members. This work includes:

  • Replacing Gas-Powered Appliances: Transitioning to efficient electric alternatives to enhance indoor air quality and reduce health risks.
  • Home Insulation and Window Upgrades: Ensuring homes are well-insulated and energy-efficient, leading to lower utility costs and increased comfort.
  • Community Collaboration: Partnering with the Department of the Environment and local organizations, such as Emerald Cities Collaborative Northern California, to ensure these changes are equitable and prevent displacement and gentrification.

Our Healthy, Resilient Homes initiative is grounded in a commitment to protect the cultural and social fabric of our neighborhoods and advance community resilience. We are dedicated to preventing the displacement of our community members by securing affordable, high-quality housing for working-class Latinx families.
