In the last two months, we have been honored to have key leaders at PODER recognized by Supervisor Chyanne Chen for their dedicated work for immigrant families and youth and their tireless dedication to justice and the well-being of our neighborhoods.
PODER Promotoras Day
October is Promotora Month and this month PODER celebrated the official designation of October 27th as “PODER Promotoras Day” in San Francisco. Thank you to Supervisor Chen for highlighting and recognizing the commitment of Amparo Alarcon, Guadalupe Benitez, Maria del Rubi Merino, Andrea Paz, and Amparo Vigil.
On October 27th, the team arrived at City Hall, where they were pleasantly surprised to learn they were being honored. These five Promotoras have demonstrated an unwavering commitment to the immigrant rights movement and ensuring communities have healthy and resilient homes free of toxic gas. PODER is incredibly proud of all the achievements made possible through the efforts of the promotora team.
Congratulations, Tere!
On September 29th, PODER staff, family and friends gathered at City Hall to celebrate the commendation presented to our colleague, Tere Almaguer. Supervisor Chen highlighted Tere’s 25 years of organizing for environmental justice at PODER and her many years of mentoring young people.
Supervisor Chen specifically mentioned Tere’s impact on her. Twenty-five years ago, as a recent immigrant, Supervisor Chen participated in the Common Roots Program, the collaborative program between PODER and the Chinese Progressive Association, which Tere co-coordinated. Supervisor Chen stated that Tere “opened my eyes to cross racial solidarity” and that “.. caring for our Earth, caring for our community, caring for one another are not separate things, they are acts of love and justice.”
Thank you Supervisor Chen!
¡Gracias, Supervisora Chen!
