Hummingbird Farm is located on Yelamu, unceded
ancestral homeland of the Ramaytush Ohlone, original
inhabitants of the San Francisco Peninsula. As the
indigenous stewards of this land and in accordance with
their traditions, the Ramaytush Ohlone have never ceded,
lost nor forgotten their responsibilities as the caretakers of
this place, as well as for all peoples who reside in their
traditional territory. As Guests, we recognize that we
benefit from living and working on their traditional
homeland. We pay our respects by acknowledging the
Ancestors and Relatives of the Ramaytush community and
by affirming their sovereign rights as First Peoples.
At the time of colonization, the Ohlone had a summer
village named Amuctac to the east of the farm, and a
winter village named Tubsinta on a cove south of
Candlestick Point. We are working with the Association of
Ramaytush Ohlone to create a traditional ramada, or
gathering place, in the next phase of the farm.
The glyph represents the Nahuatl word for sacred land,
teotlalpan. The herbs are the native Yerba Buena mint,
which was the name given by the Spanish to their
settlement in San Francisco.
