A desire to build meaningful relationships and explore places by bicycle brought me to PODER. After living in the Mission for more than a decade, I learned the importance of connecting with organizers and listening to people’s stories. Through this, I became aware of all that is possible when community-led and environmentally-just solutions are prioritized.
As a Bicis del Pueblo Action Team Member, I support group rides and learn about advocating for structures, causes, and policies that center people who have historically been excluded in decision-making spaces. I am most fulfilled when working with people who are learning how to ride bicycles and want to practice riding in the streets–a feeling reminiscent of my own upbringing in the Philippines. We listen to each other. We learn together. We build from what we know.
Bicis del Pueblo is a place where my interests in health, bicycle mechanics, political education, and community action intersect. I am humbled by everyone’s commitment to each other, and I am excited for all the movement building activities we get to do together.
