PODER, along with other member organizations from the Race & Equity in all Planning Coalition recently rallied to ensure City Hall adopts REP’s Citywide People’s Plan in their proposed Housing Element.

PODER, junto con otras organizaciones miembros de Race & Equity in all Planning Coalition, se unieron recientemente para garantizar que el ayuntamiento adopte el Plan de personas para toda la ciudad de REP en su Elemento de vivienda propuesto.

The current Housing Element works against racial and social equity, and threatens to have even more devastating impacts on vulnerable communities than Redevelopment did. As a response a series of recommendations gathered from the voices of those most impacted by displacement have been formalized as The Citywide People’s Plan. This plan prioritizes neighborhood and community expertise to actively and meaningfully participate in development and land use decisions. It ensures the next eight years of development are people centered.

El Elemento de Vivienda actual va en contra de la equidad racial y social, y amenaza con tener impactos aún más devastadores en las comunidades vulnerables que el Reurbanización. Como respuesta, se ha formalizado una serie de recomendaciones recogidas de las voces de las personas más afectadas por el desplazamiento como el Plan de la gente para toda la ciudad. Este plan prioriza la experiencia del vecindario y la comunidad para participar activa y significativamente en las decisiones de desarrollo y uso de la tierra. Garantiza que los próximos ocho años de desarrollo estén centrados en las personas.

Knowing that  the choices made now are essential to the survival of our communities, we assembled at City Hall to pressure for the Peoples Plan to be adopted. After a powerful rally and extended debate from the board of supervisors, member organizations waited patiently to give public comment. Inside of San Francisco City Hall, community leaders gave their public comment late into the evening,  emphasizing the importance of listening to grassroots leadership.

The uncertainty and fear faced by immigrants living in the United States without immigration status is real. With this project, we have given ourselves the task of bringing the most relevant information so that immigrant families have the needed resources to defend themselves, The stories in this zine are the true stories of working families who struggle every day to raise their children, working with dignity and contributing to their communities daily. 

 As always, the strong showing of people-power positions us to continue applying pressure to the City Planning Department to ensure the Housing Element addresess community needs.  Similarly, the board of supervisors needs to follow through with commitments to make affordable housing and equity a high priority on their agendas.

Como siempre, la fuerte demostración del poder de la gente nos posiciona para continuar presionando al Departamento de Planificación de la Ciudad para garantizar que el Elemento de Vivienda aborde las necesidades de la comunidad. De manera similar, la junta de supervisores debe cumplir con los compromisos de hacer que la vivienda asequible y la equidad sean una alta prioridad en sus agendas.

PODER is clear that any effort to face climate crises centers on a housed and healthy city for working class people. The  Promotora team at  PODER has been sharing the new and beautiful Know Your Rights material: “Con Confianza y Sin Miedo” on ‘Facebook Live’.“Con Confianza y Sin Miedo” is a collection of stories about protecting our rights in the face of ICE enforcement. Each story covers how best to protect ourselves in cases of interaction with immigration agents.

Este proyecto del fanzine-revista/manual de nuestros derechos civiles fue desarrollado con la intención de ofrecer una herramienta informativa a nuestras comunidades inmigrantes. Nuestra intención es que cada familia inmigrante en San Francisco tenga al alcance de su mano este manual y aprenda sobre sus derechos civiles y sepan cómo responder ante una emergencia migratoria.  

This zine was developed with the intention of offering an informative tool for our immigrant communities. Our intention is that every immigrant family in San Francisco has this manual at their fingertips and learns how to respond to an immigration emergency.

La incertidumbre y el miedo que enfrentan los inmigrantes que viven en Los Estados Unidos sin un estatus migratorio es real. Y con este proyecto, nos hemos dado a la tarea de traer la información más relevante para que las familias inmigrantes tengan los recursos necesarios para defenderse en caso de que tengan un encuentro con los agentes de inmigracion.  Las historias del fanzine son las historias reales de las familias trabajadoras que día a día luchan para sacar a sus hijos adelante, trabajando dignamente y contribuyendo al enriquecimiento cultural y laboral de este país.

Mientras trabajamos hacia un mundo sin fronteras y la dignidad de nuestra comunidad migrante, es importante preparnos con las herramientas necesarias para defendernos en el dia a dia. Cuando nosotros estamos preparados y capaces de podemos encarar la lucha para hacer una Transicion Justa hacia un mundo equitativo sin persecucion o violencia hacia nuestra comunidad migrante. Usen este material como recurso y asegurense de estar al tanto con oportunidades para unirse a la lucha.

As we work towards a world without borders and fight to affirm the dignity of our migrant community, it is important to prepare ourselves with the necessary tools to defend ourselves on a day-to-day basis. When we are prepared and able to, we can face the fight for a Just Transition, towards an equitable world without persecution or violence towards our migrant community. Use this material as a resource and make sure you are up to date with opportunities to join us in the fight.

Our Dia de los Muertx’s Harvesting Ancestral Knowledge celebration is still on our minds. PODER’s Urban Campesinx team put on a magical evening of ceremony, dancing, music, and community. 

Nuestra celebración del Día de los Muertx Cosechando Sabiduría Ancestral, todavía está en nuestras mentes. El equipo de Urban Campesinx de PODER organizó una velada mágica de ceremonia, baile, música y comunidad.

Grounded by deep gratitude for the abundance at Hummingbird Farm, our Dia de los Muertx’s celebration was dedicated to Harvesting Ancestral Knowledge.  We honored all of our collective ancestral wisdom, while also affirming the farm space, as a home for skill, story, and knowledge sharing. 

Arraigados en una profunda gratitud por la abundancia en el Huerto Colibri, la celebración de nuestro Día de los Muertx estuvo dedicada a la Cosecha de Sabiduría Ancestral. Honramos todas nuestras enseñanzas ancestral colectivo, mientras afirmamos el espacio del huerto, como un hogar para compartir habilidades, historias y conocimientos.

Urban Campesinx’s shared their efforts in making the farm a place for intergenerational gathering, to glean the lessons left to us from our ancestors, land defenders, revolutionaries, young people, plantcestors, and each other.  The team shared their gratitude for the amaranth, California Poppy, willow, Teocintle, Chia, acoco xochitl, cempazuchitl, and oak trees that teach and connect us to our ancestors every day.  Expressing gratitude to the Ramaytush Ohlone of this land, as original stewards, and honoring the spirits of those that died at the hands of colonization by the state and church.  

Urban Campesinx compartió sus esfuerzos para hacer del huerto un lugar de reunión intergeneracional, para aprender las lecciones que nos dejaron nuestros antepasados, defensores de la tierra, revolucionarios, jóvenes, ancestros y nosotros mismos. El equipo compartió su gratitud por el amaranto, la amapola de California, el sauce, el teocintle, la chía, el acoco xochitl, el cempazuchitl y los robles que nos enseñan y nos conectan con nuestros antepasados ​​todos los días. Expresando gratitud a Ramaytush Ohlone de esta tierra, como administradores originales, y honrando los espíritus de aquellos que murieron a manos de la colonización por parte del estado y la iglesia.

Together, we held our present and passed loved ones close, honoring their contributions and legacies while being reminded of the continued work towards self-determination. The farm embodied all of those intentions that night, a space for all of us to come together and build a just world by strengthening our bonds to each other. 

Juntos, mantuvimos cerca a nuestros seres queridos, presentes y fallecidos, honrando sus contribuciones y legados mientras recordamos el trabajo continuo hacia la autodeterminación. La granja personificó todas esas intenciones esa noche, un espacio para que todos nos reunamos y construyamos un mundo justo, fortaleciendo nuestros lazos de comunidad.

As we invest in resilience in the face of climate crises, it’s nights like these where we see our work manifest, bringing community together to create and shape the institutions that serve us. By fostering right relationship and community we invest in a Just Transition, bolstering spaces like the farm where we can put  regenerative economies and self governance into practice.

A medida que invertimos en resiliencia frente a las crisis climáticas, es en noches como estas donde vemos que nuestro trabajo se manifiesta, uniendo a la comunidad para generar y dar forma a las instituciones que nos sirven. Al fomentar relaciones sostenibles y sanas, invertimos en una Transición Justa, reforzando espacios como la granja donde podemos poner en práctica las economías regenerativas y el autogobierno.

June’s Housing Action Team was a bittersweet affair. The team broke bread, strategized our presence in broader coalition spaces, shared updates on upcoming events, and sadly bid farewell to a PODER family fixture and figurehead: Charlie Sciammas. 

El Equipo de Acción de Vivienda de junio fue un asunto agridulce. El equipo compartió comida, elaboró ​​una estrategia para nuestra presencia en espacios de coalición más amplios, compartió actualizaciones sobre los próximos eventos y, con tristeza, se despidió de un miembro clave de la familia PODER y figura principal: Charlie Sciammas.

As always, our June  Action Team meeting was focused and led by members and leaders. Each stepping up to facilitate portions of the agenda, engage in organizing skills development, and build collective governance practices. During the meetings’ conclusion, Charlie announced that he will be transitioning from his role at PODER. The news took the air out of the room.

Como siempre, nuestra reunión del Equipo de Acción de junio estuvo enfocada y dirigida por miembros y líderes. Cada uno de nuestros miembros toma su turno para facilitar partes de la agenda, participar en el desarrollo de habilidades de organización y construir prácticas de gobernanza colectiva. Durante la conclusión de las reuniones, Charlie anunció que hará la transición de su cargo en PODER. La noticia sacó el aire de la sala.

Despite the immediate heaviness, each Action Team member rejoiced while sharing memories with Charlie and celebrated his steadfast presence. The meeting also concluded with a deep sense of gratitude for the baton Reina Tello is picking up with Charlies transition. Our Action Team members all spoke to their eagerness and confidence in having Reina continue to lead PODER’s housing and PUEBLOTE work.

A pesar de la pesadez inmediata, cada miembro del Equipo de Acción se regocijó al compartir recuerdos con Charlie y celebró su presencia constante. El encuentro también concluyó con un profundo sentimiento de gratitud por el liderazgo que esta tomando Reina Tello con la transición de Charlie. Todos los miembros de nuestro Equipo de Acción hablaron de su entusiasmo y confianza en que Reina continúe liderando el trabajo de vivienda y PUEBLOTE de PODER.

Charlie’s leadership has been indispensable throughout a number of community victories.It was thanks to him that the Housing Justice Action Team was born, which led to wins like the Balboa Upper Yard Development. His presence has fostered the growth of the entire PODER family. Staff, membership and our broader community have all felt the impact of Charlie’s ‘lead from the back’ leadership style. His ability to build deep relationships while moving winning strategies for working-class Latinx San Franciscans cannot be overstated.

I want to express my deepest gratitude.  As a young man imagining my role in this world, I never could have imagined being able to serve my neighborhood and the City in this way.  

My tenure at PODER has been one of the absolute great pleasures of my life.  I have learned and grown tremendously as a student of the environmental justice movement.  It has been an honor to be part of so many incredible organizing campaigns, movement building formations, barrio planning, participatory research projects, popular education, and transformative policymaking.  I am indebted to my incredible colleagues and to the members of PODER for their mentorship and for bringing so much love, dedication, and determination to our collective work.  

It is with sadness and excitement that I share that I will no longer be on staff at PODER as of Thursday, July 7th.  I will be taking on a new role as Policy Director at CCHO (Council of Community Housing Organizations) where I look forward to uplifting the next generation of housing justice policies in San Francisco.

I am proud of the work that we have done together and the many hands it took to get us here, and I look forward to continuing working together. 

El liderazgo de Charlie ha sido indespensable a traves de varias victorias comunitarias. Fue gracias a Charlie que el Equipo de Acción de Vivienda se formó, lo cual llevo a cabo victorias como el desarrollo de ‘Balboa Upper Yard’. Su presencia ha fomentado el crecimiento de nuestra familia entera de PODER. Personal, miembros y nuestra amplia comunidad han sentido el impacto del estilo de liderazgo de Charlie de liderar desde atrás. Su habilidad para construir relaciones profundas mientras mueve estrategias ganadoras para Latinxs trabajadores de San Francisco nunca podrá ser suficientemente enfatizada.

Quiero expresar mi más profundo agradecimiento. Como un joven que imaginaba mi papel en este mundo, nunca podría haber imaginado poder servir a mi vecindario y a la ciudad de esta manera.

Mi permanencia en PODER ha sido uno de los grandes placeres de mi vida. He aprendido y crecido enormemente como estudiante del movimiento de justicia ambiental. Ha sido un honor ser parte de tantas campañas increíbles, formaciones de movimientos, planificación de barrios, proyectos de investigación participativos, educación popular y elaboración de políticas transformadoras. Estoy en deuda con mis increíbles colegas y con los miembros de PODER por su tutoría y por aportar tanto amor, dedicación y determinación a nuestro trabajo colectivo.

Con tristeza y emoción comparto que ya no estaré en el personal de PODER a partir del Jueves 7 de Julio. Asumiré un nuevo rol como Director de Políticas en CCHO (Consejo de Organizaciones de Vivienda Comunitaria), donde espero impulsar la próxima generación de políticas de justicia de vivienda en San Francisco.

Estoy orgulloso del trabajo que hicimos juntos y de las muchas manos que se necesitaron para llegar hasta aquí y espero seguir trabajando juntos.

Bicis del Pueblo has been partnering with the Excelsior branch of the San Francisco Public Library through the Summer stRIDE program. This partnership is working to share bicycle education and skills, build our communities’ resiliency, and promote Environmental Justice. This collaboration affirms our neighbor’s mobility and ability to access integral public services with joy and, as always, grounded in community.

Bicis del pueblo ha estado en colaboración con la sucursal del Excelsior de la Biblioteca Pública de San Francisco en el programa ‘Summer stRIDE. Esta colaboración está trabajando para compartir educación y habilidades ciclistas, crecer la resiliencia de nuestra comunidad y promover la justicia ambiental. Esta colaboración afirma la movilidad y acceso a servicios públicos fundamentales para nuestros vecinos, como siempre arraigado en comunidad y alegría.

We have been hosting  (not so) Serious Sunday Rides at the San Francisco Community School as part of the Summer stRIDE programming. These longer rides give more experienced riders the opportunity to fill out ther ‘Bike Bingos’. Participants have been using the ‘Bike Bingo’worksheet to track and complete as many bike related activities as possible. When a row is completed on the bike bingo, you can come by the Excelsior Library Branch to receive a prize. For those needing a bit more experience on the bike, we are running an obstacle course on the school blacktop to practice commuting and bike maneuvering skills.

Hemos sido anfitriones de las montadas de bicis: ‘Domingos no tan serios’ en el ‘San Francisco Community School’ como parte de la programacion de ‘Summer stRIDE‘. Estas montadas largas le dan a ciclistas con un poco más de experiencia la oportunidad de llenar sus ‘Bici Bingos’. Participes han usado sus hojas de ‘Bici Bingo’ para completar y documentar actividades ciclísticas. Cuando una fila entera está llena puedes pasar por la sucursal del Excelsior de la Biblioteca para recibir un premio. Para aquellos que necesitan un poco más de práctica en su bici, también tenemos una pista para mejorar sus maniobras y habilidades ciclistas.

Earlier this month, we joined the Reclaim our Power Coalition at a press conference on the steps of San Francisco City Hall.  Those assembled at the press conference sought to pressure Gavin Newsom to initiate Golden State Energy, the democratic alternative to California’s utility nightmare.

A mediados de este mes, nos unimos con la coalición ‘Reclaim our Power’ (Reclamemos nuestro poder) en una rueda de prensa en la entrada del ‘City Hall’ de San Francisco. Aquellos que estuvimos ensamblados buscábamos presionar al gobernador Gavin Newsom para que inicie el programa, ‘Golden State Energy’, la alternativa democrática a la pesadilla de utilidades de California.

An important part of our work in fighting for Environmental Justice is organizing for true structural alternatives to broken and harmful institutions. This fight oftentimes calls for us to hold corporate actors accountable, as was the case here. PG&E has been putting Californians health and well-being at risk through unacceptable negligence and mismanagement.  PG&E has over 250,000 backlogs of incomplete repairs and has prioritized directing money to bonuses for the CEO and corporate investors rather than upgrading infrastructure. Forcing our hand to pressure elected’s to hold PG&E accountable.

Una importante parte de nuestro trabajo luchando hacia la justicia ambiental es organizar para verdaderas alternativas estructurales a instituciones rotas y dañosas. Esta lucha, como en esta instancia, muchas veces nos llaman a forzar que corporaciones rindan cuentas. PG&PG&mas 250,000 reparaciones sin completar; sin embargo, ha priorizado dirigir sus fondos hacia bonos para su CEO e inversionistas en vez de mejorar su infraestructura. Forzando nuestra mano a presionar a nuestros electos que presionen a que PG&E se haga responsable.

Our own Antonio Diaz shared all the ways PG&E has failed San Francisco’s Black and brown communities. Emphasizing that enough is enough: we need a democratized energy system to replace the failing utility. San Francisco Supervisor Connie Chan’s resolution, which successfully passed, is a first step in bringing such a system to fruition. The resolution calls for Governor Gavin Newsom and the public utilities commission to hold PG&E accountable for their deadly, costly & destructive failures and have a nonprofit public benefit corporation acquire PG&E and put it in public hands.

Nuestro propio Antonio Diaz compartio todas las formas en que PG&E le ha fallado a las comunidades Afro y Latinxs de San Francisco. Haciendo énfasis en el llamado a ya basta. Que lo que necesitamos es un sistema de energía democratizado para reemplazar la utilidad fracasada. La resolución de la Supervisora Connie Chan, que paso con éxito, es el primer paso hacia la formación de aquel sistema. La resolusion le hace el llamado a Gavin Newsom y la comisión de utilidades publicas responsabilicé a PG&E por sus fracasos destructivos, costos y letales y ponga la utilidad en manos públicas.
