Hoy se marca el día de la inauguración presidencial. PODER, junto con toda nuestra comunidad inmigrante, sigue sintiendo la inquietud y frustración con lo que nos trae esta nueva administración. Entendemos las amenazas que vendrán de esta nueva administración hacia nuestras comunidades trabajadoras de color. Por más de 33 años hemos luchado mano a mano con nuestros vecinos para asegurar vivienda asequible, proteger los derechos del inmigrante y defender el medio ambiente, siempre honrando nuestra madre tierra.

PODER ha sido testigo de la resistencia y resiliencia de nuestro pueblo inmigrante ante los numerosos ataques a lo largo de los años. En esta fecha, cuando también conmemoramos el legado de justicia y lucha social de Martin Luther King Jr, sabemos que juntos y organizados, saldremos adelante. Como siempre, nuestro compromiso es con aquellos que son más vulnerables ante los sistemas de opresión.

A nuestra comunidad inmigrante les recordamos que, a pesar de la retórica xenófoba, todos tenemos derechos y capacidad de defender nuestra estancia en este país, sin importar nuestro estatus. Los motivamos a que se unan a la lucha y se mantengan informados.

Ofrecemos talleres comunitarios mensuales donde nos preparamos a responder a interacciones con agentes de inmigración, como crear un plan de emergencia familiar en caso de un arresto o desastre natural, repasar las actualizaciones sobre los cambios recientes a la ley de Carga Pública y cómo conseguir apoyo de la Línea de Respuesta Rápida en San Francisco en caso de una emergencia migratoria. While PODER is an intergenerational organization, the youth program serves to build Latinx youth organizing power that is culturally rooted. The Youth Organizer is responsible for implementing PODER’s youth organizing work. This includes: base building, leadership development, organizing, campaigns, and solidarity work that builds long term power and transformation in our communities. The Youth Organizer will be supervised by the Organizing Director and be supported in building out a youth team. The position requires deep collaboration with other PODER staff, youth leaders, and allies. The Youth Organizer is also responsible for the coordination and implementation of the Common Roots Program, a joint effort between PODER and the Chinese Progressive Association (CPA), that develops cross-cultural solidarity and deepens understanding of social and political issues impacting San Francisco’s Latinx and Chinese immigrant communities.

This past months series of Sunday Workshops hosted by Urban Campesinx at Fort Mason was a remarkable journey through the intersection of art, nature, and community. Drawing upon the inspirational legacy of Bonnie Ora Sherk, we embarked on a hands-on exploration of urban gardening, embracing the transformative power of green spaces within our city’s landscape. Each workshop, set against the backdrop of Sherk’s pioneering work in creating vibrant parklets and the interactive exhibit “Bonnie Ora Sherk: Life Frames Since 1970”, offered a unique opportunity to connect with the earth and each other.

La serie de talleres dominicales organizados por Urban Campesinx en Fort Mason fue un viaje extraordinario a través de la intersección del arte, la naturaleza y la comunidad. Basándonos en el legado inspirador de Bonnie Ora Sherk, nos embarcamos en una exploración práctica de la jardinería urbana, abrazando el poder transformador de los espacios verdes en el paisaje de nuestra ciudad. Cada taller, con el telón de fondo del trabajo pionero de Sherk en la creación de vibrantes parklets y la exposición interactiva “Bonnie Ora Sherk: Life Frames Since 1970”, ofrecieron una oportunidad única para conectar con la tierra y con los demás.

Amidst soil, seeds, and laughter, we learned about sustainable gardening practices and celebrated the profound impact of communal efforts in urban renewal and ecological awareness. Sherk’s vision of integrating life, art, and community through environmental transformations was brought to life, reminding us of the potential within our reach to foster regenerative, thriving urban environments.

Entre tierra, semillas y risas, aprendimos prácticas de jardinería sostenible y celebramos el profundo impacto de los esfuerzos comunitarios en la renovación urbana y la concienciación ecológica. La visión de Sherk de integrar la vida, el arte y la comunidad a través de transformaciones medioambientales cobró vida, recordándonos el potencial que tenemos a nuestro alcance para fomentar entornos urbanos regeneradores y prósperos.

Mientras reflexionamos sobre el éxito de estos talleres y el perspicaz diálogo compartido por Tere, recordamos el poder de nuestra comunidad de Campesinx Urbano, que practica la administración intencional de la tierra a través de la práctica. Estas experiencias no sólo honran el espíritu innovador de Bonnie Ora Sherk, sino que también allanan el camino para la construcción de poder en curso y la justicia ambiental profunda dentro de nuestros propios paisajes de San Francisco. Gilbert Williams dedicated PODER member for over a decade has spent the entire pandemic learning about Land Use through his participation in the Race & Equity in all Planning Coalition’s “All Planning to the People” series. Always wanting to learn more by asking questions, and supporting his fellow community members leadership development, his leadership presented an opportunity to have a seat at the decision making table. After months of careful consideration, weeks of sleepless nights navigating the application process to join the Planning Commission. It was a whirlwind finale that started with the Rules Committee on Monday March 11th, Full Board vote Tuesday March 12th,  Sworn in Wednesday March 13th, and first day as Planning Commissioner on Thursday March 14th.

Gilbert Williams, miembro dedicado de PODER desde hace más de una década, ha pasado toda la pandemia aprendiendo sobre el uso del suelo a través de su participación en la serie “Toda la planificación para el pueblo” de la Coalición Raza y Equidad en toda la Planificación. Siempre queriendo aprender más haciendo preguntas, y apoyando el desarrollo del liderazgo de sus compañeros miembros de la comunidad, su liderazgo presentó una oportunidad de tener un asiento en la mesa de toma de decisiones. Después de meses de cuidadosa consideración, semanas de noches sin dormir navegando por el proceso de solicitud para unirse a la Comisión de Planificación. Fue un torbellino final que comenzó con el Comité de Reglas el lunes 11 de marzo, la votación de toda la Junta el martes 12 de marzo, juramento el miércoles 13 de marzo, y el primer día como Comisionado de Planificación el jueves 14 de marzo.

This past Saturday March 30th,2024 only 17 days after his first meeting, Gilbert finally has the opportunity to celebrate this community win! All smiles, surrounded by his partner Jackie, family, friends, colleagues fighting for social justice, all witnessed President of the Board of Supervisors Aron Peskin officiate Gilbert’s community swearing in located at 4840 Mission Street. One of the two new 100% affordable sites, the celebration uplifted the community effort that led to a larger neighborhood clinic on the first floor. It was a beautiful sunny day, perfectly matching the energy in that space.

El pasado sábado 30 de marzo de 2024, sólo 17 días después de su primera reunión, Gilbert finalmente tuvo la oportunidad de celebrar esta victoria de la comunidad. Todo sonrisas, rodeado de su pareja Jackie, familia, amigos, colegas que luchan por la justicia social, todos presenciaron al Presidente de la Junta de Supervisores Aron Peskin oficiando la juramentación comunitaria de Gilbert ubicada en 4840 Mission Street. Uno de los dos nuevos sitios 100% asequibles, la celebración elevó el esfuerzo de la comunidad que condujo a una clínica de barrio más grande en el primer piso. Fue un hermoso día soleado, perfectamente a juego con la energía en ese espacio.
